From the Northeastern Jamaican coast the locals of Portland are known as “Porties“

Jamaican cooking very much echoes the contribution of settlers that have called the Island home, from the indigenous “Arawak” populations leading up to when Columbus claimed the island for Spanish power until other European nations and crowns all claimed Jamaica for their own.

Mixing with slaves from African tribes in later episodes of Jamaica’s history, waves of German, Irish, Chinese, Syrian and Middle Eastern immigrants melted into the cultural complexity of the Island.
